Our Story

Let's change the period experience.

It has long-been accepted that period symptoms are a fact of life. The pain, heavy bleeding, bloating, headaches, fatigue, and generalized discomfort that accompany a period are bothersome but are generally expected to be tolerated without significant intervention. What greater evidence is there for this than the fact that only ONE over-the-counter medicine has been brought to market that specifically targets period pain and bloating…and that was in 1911! And while a limited number of existing over-the-counter options can effectively manage period symptoms, most people have not been advised on the proper way to use them. The lack of education about the menstrual period and a community-wide refusal to acknowledge its profound physical, social, economic, and mental health impacts pose a tremendous threat to women’s liberty. Studies have shown that productivity goes down significantly during menstruation due to inadequately controlled side effects, and symptoms are often so debilitating that work or school absenteeism is the only management option. To maintain the status quo is a social injustice.

Our Founder

"When I was fifteen I went on a summer exchange program to Kenya and stayed with a family. The oldest son and his wife, Rhoda, lived in the home. Rhoda and I spent the days together getting water and teaching each other how to cook with what was available. One of the days Rhoda looked at me and said, “I am college educated and here I am. How come you can come all the way across the world to visit me and I can't go to visit you?” That was a life-defining moment for me. It was simultaneously a lesson in gratitude and privilege, and it marked the beginning of my absolute commitment to women’s liberty. Decades later, I have never strayed from that commitment. I believe in the value of women as humans in and of themselves, not solely because of their reproductive organs. I became an obstetrician/gynecologist because I believe that in order for women to have value and liberty in this world, they must be able to decide when, if and in what way they want to use their reproductive organs. This is why I have worked both in the fertility and the abortion spaces - they are fundamentally one and the same work. It is also why I founded Wave Bye."
